Type Locality and Naming

East-central Yunnan. The Huangcaoling Fm was named by Wen Jieshi in 1961. The type section extends from Huangcaoling to Jiuzhai Village, Eshan County, Yunnan Province. It is attributed (3/7) formation to the Kunyang Gr.

Synonym: (黄草岭组)


Lithology and Thickness

The formation is composed of black, grey-black sericite phyllitic slate, silty slate and phyllite. The lower part has grey, greyish thick-bedded dolomite; and the middle part contains grey-white, grey-green feldspar-quartz siltstone, silty slate and quartzite. It is recorded as 300-660 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The bottom is not seen. Schematic stratigraphic column shows the underlying unit is a Changjiacheng Fm (not in Lexicon); and regionally the next older unit is the Luzhijiang Fm (Jixianian).

Upper contact

The top is conformably overlain by the Heishantou Fm.

Regional extent

East-central Yunnan. The formation is recognized mainly in Yimen, Eshan, Shiping and Dongchuan counties, Yunnan Province.

Fossils

The microplants recognized in the formation are: Leiopsophosphaera, Taeniatum, Lophominuscula, Polyporata etc. The stromatolites in the carbonate intercalations in lower part of the formation in Dongchuan area are Conophyton baculun, C. lituun etc.


Age 

SHRIMP U-Pb date of 1050± Ma on zircon from the underlying formation (Zhang Heng et al., 2020). Schematic stratigraphic section assigns as early Yuxian (early Stenian) – lowest of 5 formations put here in Yuxian.
